How it works
This assumes the tax on the conversion is paid from the converted money, and both accounts grow at the same rate. In that case the outcome depends mainly on whether your tax rate today is lower or higher than in retirement. Paying the tax from other savings, state taxes, Medicare premium thresholds, required minimum distributions and the five-year rules can all change the picture. Withdrawals of earnings before age 59½, or within five years of a conversion, may be subject to taxes and penalties. Tax laws and rates can change.
