How it works
Claiming before full retirement age reduces benefits by 5/9 of 1% per month for the first 36 months and 5/12 of 1% for each month after. Waiting past full retirement age adds 2/3 of 1% per month, up to age 70. Totals are in today's dollars without cost-of-living adjustments, taxes, or spousal and survivor benefits, or the earnings test if you work before full retirement age. Benefit rules can change by law. For your official estimate, use your statement at ssa.gov.
